If you’re in the mood for Mexican classics or have a hankering for some smoked barbeque, head over to Chichimecas in Farmingdale. Owners Maria and Alejandro Gonzalez run this beautiful establishment, the previous home of Estelle’s Contemporary BBQ, and they’re waiting to cook you up a meal like no other!
The bar is featured on the first floor of Chichimecas, with most of the seating available on the second floor. Both spaces feature stucco walls, which are painted dark blue downstairs and a combination of white and blue upstairs. The walls boast colorful paintings and the tables are topped with brightly colored, striped serapes and protected by white bistro paper ¬– all adding to the jovial atmosphere.
Many appetizers and salads are available, but if you love soup, you must try the Pozole Chilapa, made with tasty pork stock and filled with hominy and strips of pork. This lovely liquid dish, which is also accompanied by a tostada topped with refried beans, lettuce, sour cream and pico de gallo, will give you the perfect beginning to a delectable authentic meal. The tortilla soup is also a favorite, with its smooth, flavor-packed tomato brew topped with strips of crunchy tortilla.
Entrees include the Paella, a seafood medley of shrimp, scallops, calamari, tilapia chorizo and chicken over a bed of Mexican rice; and the Chile En Nogada, a pablano pepper filled with mignon, pork loin, fruits, almonds and pecans and covered with pomegranate and Grand Marnier Almond Sauce. If you’re looking for barbeque, the tender mesquite-smoked ribs, with barbecue sauce on the side, and the thin smoked pork chops are delicious choices. Covered with a tomato sauce and loaded with onions and corn, both will leave you completely satisfied.
The desserts are made on the premises and include Arroz con Leche, a creamy rice pudding; slices of fried plantain garnished with puffs of aerosol whipped cream; and Tres leches cake, a traditional moist Mexican cake made with three different kinds of milk.
